Edward (Brud) Enoch Leggatt of Miramichi (Chatham) sadly passed away October 15th, 2021 at 86 years young. Born to Michael and Gladys (Hennesey) Leggatt December 1934, Brud was the second of five children.
He attended St. Michael’s Elementary, St. Thomas High School, and St. Mary’s Collegiate in Halifax, Nova Scotia where he began to hone his entrepreneurship skills. His interest in commerce was learned first at his father’s side before starting/operating family-run businesses.
He spent his early career under the guidance of his uncle, Kirby Leggatt, who gave him his first real job at Canada Packers in the Annapolis Valley. With his new wife and young son, they returned to Chatham to operate the MicMac Restaurant where the community and St. Thomas University students alike loved to socialize over a Coke and jute box jingles.
He was a proud life member of one political party; once the President of the Youth Wing, then running to be a Member of Parliament in 1963 on Team Diefenbaker. With an election loss behind him, a father of five children, turned his attention to the family business running Leggatt’s Hillcrest Convenience with his wife and daughter, Alexis; Leggatt’s Wholesale with his son, Michael; and Leggatt’s Vending with his son Edward. He sold his businesses in 1994, then dove into the ups and downs of stock market investing until his final days.
He met and married the love of his life, Rose Rita Morrisey in November 1954. Their life journey together produced what he once described as his greatest achievement, seven children: Michael (France) Miramichi, NB, Mary (Paul), Mahone Bay, NS, Tracey (Mike), Riverview, NB, Richard (Melissa), Tampa, Florida, Donna (Dan, dec), Fredericton, NB, Edward (Ann), Miramichi, NB and Alexis (Dimitri), Hubley, NS. They were further blessed with 15 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his siblings Kirby (Shirley) Edmonton, Alberta, Arthur (Carol dec) Miramichi, NB and Linda (Jamie) Miramichi, NB as well as many in-laws, nieces, nephews and cousins. He is preceded in death by his parents Michael and Gladys, as well as his sister, Patricia F Leggatt, as well as his mother and father in-law, Joseph and Alexis Morrisey.
Brud’s life long loves would not be complete with an honorable mention of his beloved Montreal Canadians, the Toronto Blue Jays, and the Chatham Ironmen. He so enjoyed his every morning Tim Horton’s ‘Wise Men’s Club’ where politics, sports, and exaggerated stories of accomplishment were the main event. He loved a good book and could often be found in his car, parked close to a river view or under a shady tree, reading for hours on end. He also loved to travel and gifted Rose with a big trip every year, whether she wanted it or not.
Special thanks and deep gratitude for the excellent care given by Nancy Daley, the Extra-Mural Team, and the Miramichi Regional Hospital nurses, doctors, and specialists.
A funeral mass will be held at St. Michael’s Basilica on Thursday, October 21, 2021, followed by a burial at St. Michael’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Miramichi Hospice---Losier Foundation or a charity of your choice.
