It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Peter Arthur (Art) Theriault at the Miramichi Regional Hospital at the age of 93. He was born in Chatham, NB on June 29, 1926, son of the late Theophile and Bella (Poirier) Theriault.
Art spent time in the Canadian Armed Forces as part of their presence in Germany after World War II. After marrying Norma in 1954 he obtained his Stationary Engineer’s license and had a long career as a Federal Civil Servant at CFB Chatham and CFB St. Margaret’s heating plants until his retirement and he was proud to have been a long-time president of the Union of National Defense Employees (U.N.D.E.) during that time.
Art lived all his life in the house he was born. He and Norma raised eight children and were amazing and involved grandparents to nine grandsons and one granddaughter and several step-grandchildren. In 1967 he found a rustic fishing shanty in Bay du Vin which became our family cottage and many wonderful summers were spent at Horton’s Creek and are still enjoyed today under the ownership of his son Stephen. In 1983 Art found another beautiful property on Bay du Vin River and decided to build a little camp there for his family to enjoy. His enthusiasm and love for these places has been passed on to all his children and grandchildren.
Art is survived by four sons: Stephen, Mark, Aaron (Renee) and Roger (Alex), two daughters: Lynn (John) MacDonald and Lisa (Darren) Kadey and one daughter-in-law Holly Theriault. He also leaves behind nine grandsons: Paul, Joe (Janice), Mel, Michael, Zachary, Lucus and Lance Theriault and Alex (Mylene) and Connor MacDonald, one granddaughter Milly (Theriault) Martell and step-grandchildren Vanessa, Brandon, Jessica and Adam.
He was predeceased by his wife Norma (Richard) and sons Rick and Brian. He was also the last surviving member of a family of ten children.
Visitation will be held at Maher’s Funeral Home on Thursday, January 2, 2020 from 2-4 and 7-9. Mass of Christian burial will be Friday, January 3, 2020 at Saint Michael’s Basilica at 11:00 am.
For those who wish donations to the St. Michael’s Basilica Capital Campaign or any charity of your choice would be appreciated.
